It was on this day, in 1946, Goans staged an open but peaceful revolt against the atrocities enacted on them by the Portuguese colonial regime. On 18th June 1946, Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia along with Dr. Julião Menezes, with his fearless speeches against the repressive colonial rule, manifested the courage of Goans, to fight against the Portuguese regime.

The spark which was lit by Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia at Margao marked the final stage of the freedom movement that culminated into the Liberation of Goa. This period had witnessed an era of supreme sacrifice by the freedom fighters. Many embraced martyrdom, and thousands of others went through untold hardships and deportation”.

“This is the occasion to remember, salute and pay homage to the sacrifice and bravery of respected martyrs who laid their life for the freedom of Goa. I pay my humble tribute to the martyrs and freedom fighters. Let us join hands together and strive to protect the hard earned freedom by rededicating ourselves to achieve greater progress,” CM concluded.
