Goan Reporter: After a Decade of Waterlogging, Chicalim’s Sottyo Field Finally Ready for Cultivation

After nearly a decade of persistent waterlogging, the once-dry agricultural field locally known as “Sottyo” in Chicalim is finally dry and ready for cultivation again For the past 10 years, the field remained waterlogged almost throughout the year, resembling a pond more than a cultivable area. Numerous inspections were carried out by various departments, and the recurring conclusion pointed fingers at a suspected blockage in the cross drain under the National Highway (NH). “From day one after getting elected, I took the issue seriously. I personally inspected the drain and found it was not blocked, contrary to what was being assumed for years,” – Panch member Roman Vaz Determined to get to the root of the problem, Vaz conducted a detailed inquiry and identified a leakage from a PWD water pipeline as the actual cause behind the waterlogging. With the final tarring work on the road underway, time was of the essence. Vaz reached out to the NH Cortalim division and the PWD department, both of which responded swiftly and cooperatively. Their joint efforts bore fruit. The leakage was rectified, and for the first time in years, the “Sottyo” field stands dry — a welcome sight for local farmers and residents alike. The Agriculture Department has also assured its support and has committed to de-weeding the field to facilitate its return to productive use. Roman Vaz has promised to follow up closely to ensure the work is completed at the earliest.
