A State-level programme will be organised to commemorate Goa Revolution Day on June 18, 2026, at 8:45 a.m. at Azad Maidan, Panaji. The occasion will honour the sacrifices and enduring legacy of the freedom fighters whose courage and determination played a pivotal role in Goa’s liberation movement. The programme will be attended by Governor, Shri Pusapati Ashok Gajapathi Raju, Chief Minister, Dr. Pramod Sawant, freedom fighters, senior Government officials, representatives of various organizations and other distinguished guests.
Rooted in one of the most significant chapters of Goa’s history, the observance commemorates the events of June 18, 1946, when Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia and Dr. Julião Menezes inspired a mass movement against Portuguese colonial rule. Their call for civil disobedience ignited a wave of public participation that transformed Goa’s freedom struggle and laid the foundation for the State’s eventual liberation.
Reflecting the Government’s continued commitment to honouring freedom fighters and their families, several welfare measures have been implemented over the years. Under the Scheme for Providing Employment in Government to the Children of Freedom Fighters, introduced in 2013, a total of 397 candidates have been sponsored for employment in various Government departments up to February 2026. Following a fresh round of applications invited earlier this year, 79 applications were received, and 27 eligible candidates will be provided Government employment under the scheme.
Further strengthening efforts to preserve the legacy of Goa’s freedom movement, the Government has recently decided to enhance the pension of freedom fighters from ₹9,000 to ₹12,000, along with applicable allowances. In addition, official State honours are now being accorded during the last rites of registered freedom fighters. The Government has also initiated the observance of ‘Balidan Dis’ in memory of Goa’s first martyr, Bala Raya Mapari, reinforcing the importance of remembering and celebrating the contributions of those who fought for Goa’s freedom.
