Amiri penalty earns solitary goal win in Charity game

18/08/2014 … A second half penalty from Haroon Amiri earned Dempo Sports Club a 1-0 win over 10-men Sporting Clube de Goa in Gfa’s Charity Cup match, at Duler Stadium, Mapusa on Sunday. The match was goalless at the interval.

Sporting Goa had to play the last thirty five minutes with only ten men after Chandrasheker Chinta was sent off after he was adjudged to have pushed Clifford Miranda in the box, although the contact did not look intentional. It was this incident which led to Dempo being awarded a penalty that Haroon calmly slotted home.

Sporting Goa sent out an early warning in the fifteenth minute after Sumit Ghosh rattled the cross bar with a powerful free kick.

At the other end Clifford came close for Dempo, but the Sporting Goa custodian Melroy Fernandes who was in impressive form palmed the ball away. Just before the breather, Melroy pulled off a marvelous double save from Holicharan Nazary.

Changing over Melroy had to be replaced early on through injury, which was a big loss for Sporting Goa.

The game dropped in tempo after Sporting Goa was reduced to ten men. The only clear cut chance was when Dempo’s Holciharan hit the post.

Late on the Flaming Oranje tried to find the equalizer as they used up all of their allotted seven substitutions, but it was not to be as Dempo capitalized on their numerical advantage and held on.

The only consolation for Sporting Goa was when new signing Pablo Gallardo came on to taste the action and looked composed.
