In a glorious tribute to the legendary actress, Madhuri Dixit, the 54th International Film Festival of India honoured her with ‘Special Recognition for Contribution to Bharatiya Cinema’ Award. With an illustrious career spanning four remarkable decades, Madhuri Dixit has left an indelible mark on the Indian film industry. Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting and Youth Affairs and Sports Shri Anurag Singh Thakur along with MoS Information & Broadcasting, Dr. L. Murugan, and Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant announced the award at the inaugural function of 54th IFFI held at Panaji, Goa today.

“An icon across the ages, Madhuri Dixit has graced our screens with unparalleled talent for four incredible decades”, posted the Union Minister for Information & Broadcasting and Youth Affairs & Sports Shri Anurag Singh Thakur on X.

Her ability to bring diverse characters to life has enthralled audiences across generations. The ‘Special Recognition for Contribution to Bharatiya Cinema’ Award stands as a testament to Madhuri Dixit’s exceptional achievements and her enduring impact on Indian cinema. A lead actress in Hindi movies of 1980s, 90s and early 2000s, Madhuri Dixit received six Filmfare Awards and had been nominated for the Filmfare Award for Best Actress a record fourteen times. Dixit made her film debut in ‘Abodh (1984) and received wider public recognition with Tezaab (1988). In 2014 she was appointed the UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador in India.

Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Youth Affairs & Sports, Shri Anurag Singh Thakur while inaugurating the Film Bazar the largest South Asian film market at Marriott Resort, Goa today said that the film bazaar, much like a bustling marketplace of ideas, is a haven for filmmakers, producers, and storytellers from all corners of the globe. It’s a confluence of creativity and commerce, ideas and inspirations that form the building blocks of this thriving cinematic marketplace.

On the occasion, Shri Anurag Singh Thakur said that Indian media & entertainment industry, with an annual growth rate of 20%, is hailed as the fifth-largest and most globalized industry in the world. In its 17th year, the Film Bazaar has become an indispensable cornerstone of the IFFI, transcending borders and evolving into one of Asia’s biggest film markets.

Union Minister informed that this year, the selection of films for the Film Bazaar reflects a diverse mix of fiction, docu-shorts, documentaries, horror films, and even an animated film that deals with universal themes relating to the diaspora, patriarchy, urban angst, extreme poverty, climate crisis, nationalism, sports and fitness.

Speaking of the co-production market, the Minister said “We proudly present twelve documentaries from 7 countries in the Coproduction Market, exploring life in 17 different languages. It’s a journey into the heart of reality through the lens of filmmakers.”

He also said that the video library platform, the Viewing Room, shows 190 submissions, a few submissions from which will be selected for the Film Bazaar Recommends (FBR). “The Work-in-Progress Lab is where filmmakers show the raw beauty of their work. Doubling the project count from last year, we have 10 projects ready to unveil this year,” the Minister said.

Shri Thakur also announced that as a nod to innovation and in line with the Prime Minister’s call for ease of doing business, an exciting new component, “Book to Box Office,” has been added which will showcase 59 submissions seamlessly making the jump from books to screens. In the sidelines of the event, the Minister also inaugurated Google Arts and Culture Hindi exhibit which is an online hub having images and short videos from Hindi films.

The 10 recommended films from a variety of genres to be showcased in Film Bazaar at IFFI 54TH including documentary, horror, climate crisis, fiction etc. The films are in English, Hindi, Bengali, Marwari, Kannada, and Maori (New Zealand language).  This year, the Film Bazaar has a newly curated “VFX & Tech Pavilion” which intends to make the filmmakers aware of the latest innovations, to explore the possibilities of storytelling by not just the traditional way of “taking the shot”, but also “creating the shot”.

The Film Bazaar showcases the official selection of the feature-length projects of the Co-Production Market from India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, USA, UK, Singapore, Germany, France, Poland, Luxembourg and Israel. The selected filmmakers will be pitching their projects to International and Indian producers, distributors, festival programmers, financiers, and sales agents at the open Pitch.

Goan Reporter News: Harley bike rally held to encourage people to come watch National Games

The 37th National Games organisers in collaboration with Harley Davidson Bike Owners Goa Chapter and Mayfair Hotels organised a bike rally on Sunday from Tilak Maidan, Vasco to the Campal Games Village to raise awareness for the Games and also encourage people to come and watch the sporting extravaganza.

About 10,000 athletes are competing for glory in over 40 sports disciplines in the National Games that are being held at five different locations for over a fortnight.

The rally, which saw over 30 owners participate, was flagged off by Games Technical Committee Chairman Amitabh Sharma and the riders covered a distance of about 35 kilometres during which they raised awareness about the Games and what they mean for the state.

Addressing the riders, Sharma said “Goa has always been the most popular tourist destination in the country. By organising the National Games, the state has underlined its potential as a future sports hub.”

Harley Davidson Riders Goa Chapter director Francis Gomes said, “National Games provides everyone a platform to interact with players from across the country and promotes Unity in Diversity,”

“The moto of these Games is Judenge, Jiyenge, JItenge and it is the need of the hour,” he added.

The rally saw different models of Harley Davidson like 90s classic, 40x among others. “Harley is not just a bike but an emotion. We believe that the bike chooses you and not the other way around,” said Goa chapter Deputy Director A Mendis.

The owners also enjoyed watching action in weightlifting, Pencak Silat, table tennis and swimming at Campal.

Mayfair Elixir Managing Director Bjorn Deniese, who was instrumental in arranging the bike rally, said, “We are elated to be associated with the National Games in Goa and Harley Davidson. We are confident that chief minister Pramod Sawant’s vision of developing sports tourism in the state through this platform will definitely come true.”

Goan Reporter News: Goa’s Kareena Shirodkar creates history with Pencak Silat gold in her first ever competition.

Kareena Shirodkar created history in her very first Pencak Silat competition to help Goa clinch their second gold medal of the 37th National Games on Sunday.

The 23-year-old, who recently completed her Bachelor’s degree in Law and wants to pursue criminal lawyer, dominated Jammu and Kashmir’s Jiya Choudhary 30-15 to clinch the gold medal in the Tanding Female 80-85 kg category at the Campal Sports Village.

With her family and entire Goa team cheering her, Shirodkar looked confident from the start, opening up a 11-8 lead in the opening round and never looked back.

“I am very happy that I could win the gold medal for Goa in my very first Pencak Silat competition. I love martial arts and started learning this sport just over a month ago and loved it,” said Shirodkar, who has already represented the state at the national level in Taekwondo.

Asked what made her shift to Pencak Silat when Taekwondo is also part of the National Games, the Miramar resident said she basically loves to learn new martial art forms and decided to learn this sport as it is also a combat sport.

Goa has had considerable success in Pencak Silat at the National Games with the hosts adding seven bronze medals in Tanding through Anslet Sebastian (female 55-60 kg),

Chloe Furtado (female 75-80 kg), Asha Naik (female 65-70 kg), Mohd. Irfan Khan (male 65-70 kg), Ganpatrao Desai (male 75-80 kg) and Sagar Palconda (male 85-90 kg) and Siraj Khan (Male 90-95 kg).

The rich haul in Pencak Silat means Goa now has bagged a total of 23 medals including two gold, four silver and 17 bronze.

Goan Reporter News: Swimmer Sanjana Prabhugaonkar adds silver to Goa’s tally

Goa’s Sanjana Prabugaonkar bagged her maiden senior medal when she clinched the women’s 200m freestyle silver medal on home turf in the 37th National Games at the Campal Swimming Pool on Sunday.

The 16-year-old, who now trains at the Aqua Nation Sports Academy in Dubai, clocked a timing of 2:08.89 seconds to finish behind Dhinidhi desinghu of Karnataka. Vritti Agarwal of Telangana won the bronze medal.

Sanjana, who had won multiple medals at the junior level, was understandably elated with her performance as she has been troubled with a shoulder injury and had not been training regularly for the last six months and had not competed for a while.

“It’s been a month since I started training regularly. And it feels good to have a meet in my hometown and win my first National Games medal,” said Sanjana, who has been swimming since the age of 7.

Asked about her decision to train in Dubai, Sanjana said the decision was taken during the covid lockdown to go and train in UAE as it was difficult to practice in India. “I liked the training there and then we decided to continue training there.”

Sanjana and her mother now stay in Dubai and the 16-year-old only comes to Goa to give her exams, completing her academies through home tuitions.

“This medal has only motivated me further to work harder,” she added.

Pernem MLA Shri Pravin Arlekar said that it is a proud feeling to see Goan sportspersons participating in the 37th National Games and winning medals for the state.

He was speaking as the chief guest for the inauguration of the Rowing and Kayaking disciplines of the National Games in Chapora River on Saturday.

“I am proud and excited that Goa is hosting the 37th National Games. I was the chief guest for the netball function yesterday. It was a nice feeling to see Goans taking part in the sport and winning medals for the state. This is a proud moment for us. Goa does not have sportspersons in rowing as the sport does not have a presence in the state. Our Goan children should take it up,” he said.

He further went on to mention that youngsters from all corners of the state should be aware of these Games and take up various sports.

“They should make Goa and India proud. We have a lot of youngsters who need to come out and take up sports. It’s nice to see our dynamic Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant who has taken this initiative to host the Games in Goa. Our Sports Minister Shri Govind Gaude has also given an opportunity for Goa’s youngsters to take part in the Games. The BJP government has done a commendable job to promote sportspersons, “he said.

Arlekar further went on to congratulate the athletes from across the country who are participating in the Games.

Bicholim MLA Dr. Chandrakant Shetye on Friday inaugurated the Billiards and Snooker disciplines at Peddem Sports Complex for the 37th National Games.

Mapusa municipality chairperson Smt Priya Mishal was also present along with other dignitaries.

Speaking at the programme, Dr. Shetye said that the Games is an ideal platform for young sportspersons to take inspiration.

“Goan sportspersons should take inspiration from this Games. The State and Central governments have spent so much money to upgrade the infrastructure for the 37th National Games in Goa, so they should make the best use of it. Sports enthusiasts are getting an opportunity to witness various sports disciplines live. Many of our Goans have also participated,” he said.

“The Prime Minister yesterday said that the budget for sports used to be Rs 8000 crore but after 2014, the Central Government has tripled the outlay. Our government is very serious about sports, earlier it used to be taken lightly. The government is working to support sportspersons,” he said.

True to the motto ‘Get, Set, Goa’, Dr. Shetye said that he is happy to see the Games happening in the state.

“The National Games is the highest platform in the country and is a launchpad for participating in international events. Many talented youngsters can represent the state. They can reach the international level for which they should aim for. Sportspersons should be very serious about it. We should all participate in sport it helps one make decisions in life, how to be clear about it, and future planning.

Goan Reporter News: Goa’s tally swells to nine with silver in Netball Fast5 format, two more bronze medals in Pencak Silat

Hosts Goa won three more medals with netball men’s team clinching silver and two bronze medals in Pencak Silat to take their medals tally to nine in the 37th National Games at the Campal Indoor stadium on Friday.

In the netball competition, that ended at the Campal Indoor stadium on Friday, the men’s team lost to Fast5 final 33-22 against Haryana to end their campaign on a high.

Having failed to qualify for the semi-finals in the traditional format, Goa’s men had made amends in the Fast5 format, finishing second behind Haryana in the group stage.

On Friday morning, they pipped Karnataka 42-41 in the semifinals to set up yet another clash against favourites Haryana in the final.

In the summit clash played in the evening, Haryana began aggressively and opened up a 12-3 lead in the first quarter. But Goa managed to pull things back with Sanmay Bandekar scoring six points to help his team reduce the game to five points with the score reading 16-11 at half time.

The hosts continued their strong showing, intercepting Haryana’s passes to go into the fourth and final quarter trailing 18-20 and raised hopes of a possible upset.

However, Haryana showed why they were such a formidable side as they scored 13 points in the final quarter to win comfortably.

Goa coach Sandeep Shetkar was extremely happy with the team’s overall performance. “We could not win a medal in the traditional format but all our matches were very close and we were slightly unlucky. But I am happy that we made amends in the Fast5 format and have a silver medal to show for our effort,” he said, adding this team would only go places from here on.

Two more medals in Pencak Silat

Later in the day, the hosts continue their medal winning spree in the martial art form Pencak Silat with bronze medals in Artistic Regu Male and Artistic Tunggal Female category.

The trio of Aley Da Silva, Pratik Nayak and Ryan Fernandes impressed with their performance in Regu to clinch bronze along with Uttarakhand. Maharashtra took home the gold with Odisha bagging silver medal.
