Fr. Agnel Girls and Lourdes Boys are Youth Basketball Champs

Panaji: 21st August 2018 ::: Fr. Agnel’s girls and Lourdes Convent boys were crowned champs of the Aliens Youth State Basketball Championship held at the Don Bosco Oratory indoor courts on 20th Aug 2018. Seventeen teams in the boys and girls category participated in the championship which was conducted over three days of intense competition.

In the girls category, Lourdes Convent defeated Fatima convent 17-14 in a close match, while Fr. Agnels had an easy win over Sharada Assailants 17-04. In the finals, Fr. Agnel’s was confident with height and skill advantage and easily won the match 29-10. Elain (7), Kimeron (6), Walencia (6)  and well assisted by Arantxa played well for Fr. Agnels. Elaine (6) of Lourdes put a good fight for the team and was adjudged the Most Valuable Player.  

In the boys category, Lourdes convent put up a good team performance to overpower the confident Sonics team to grab the championship with just 2 baskets margin 30-26. Lourdes Convent took an early lead in the first quarter (10-4) and looked good to go from the start.

But Sonics pulled up a good show in the second quarter to get the scores tied (10-10) at halftime. However, even though the scores between the two teams were tied in the last quarter, the early third quarter lead by Lourdes of two baskets were the ones that gave the honour of the state championship. Selwyn Coelho of Sonics was awarded the Most Valuable player, while Shubham Singh (16) was rightly awarded the highest scorer.

DM NORTH EXTENDS LIQUOR BAN IN SURLA

Panaji, August  21, 2018 … The  District Magistrate, North has  further extended for  prohibiting all the liquor bars, shops Pubs, Clubs, Provision Stores or any Establishment serving or selling liquor or alcoholic beverages in retails or packed bottles in village of Surla, within the Thane Dongurli Village Panchayat of Sattari Taluka in North Goa.

Selling Liquor and all types of alcoholic beverages extended for  a period of 30 days from August 19, 2018 onwards.

SADBHAVANA DIWAS OBSERVED AT SECRETARIAT

Panaji, August 20, 2018 … Chief Secretary, Shri Dharmendra Sharma, IAS garlanded the portrait of late Shri Rajiv Gandhi and administered the ‘Sadbhavana Pledge’ to the staff of Secretariat, Porvorim today on the occasion of Sadbhavana Diwas.

Sadbhavana Diwas is observed nationwide every year on August 20, to commemorate the birth anniversary of late Shri Rajiv Gandhi, former Prime Minister of India, to promote the national integration and communal harmony amongst people of all religions, languages and regions to eschew violence and to promote goodwill among the people.

VEHICLES PROHIBITED ON SOUTH GOA BEACHES

Panaji, August  19, 2018 … District Magistrate, South Goa District has prohibited the movement of all kinds of Motor Vehicles on the beaches within the jurisdiction of South Goa District, except vehicles deployed for the purpose of comprehensive Management of cleanliness on beaches, vehicles for Beach lifeguarding services, vehicles of Tourist Security Force and vehicles of Police Department.

Above prohibition with subject to the condition that care should be taken to avoid turtle nesting sites during patrolling and also no sanddune vegetation and turtles should be disturbed. No patrolling should be done at Galgibag beach.

Young Goans Club, Bahrain Ladies Wing Celebrates OUR LADY OF ASSUMPTION FEAST on 15th August

Panaji 16th August 2018 ::: The Young Goans Club, Kingdom of Bahrain, Ladies Wing recently organised a Block Rosary on the occasion of the Feast of Our Lady of Assumption Feast on 15th August 2018 in the Young Goans Club Premises at Manama in Bahrain.

Around 100 members and guest attended the Rosary, Prayers were offered for the deceased Members of Young Goan’s Club and of the wider Goan Community in the Kingdom of Bahrain, for the Retired Goan Residents, Ex Residents of the Kingdom of Bahrain, and for the well being of all the Goans in the Kingdom of Bahrain.

EFFORTS BEING MADE TO REGULATE TRAFFIC AT CORTALIM/AGACAIM JUNCTIONS

Panaji. Dated: August 17, 2018 …. On the instructions of Chief Minister Shri Manohar Parrikar, Chief Secretary,  Dharmendra Sharma,  DGP, Dr. Muktesh Chander, Pr. Secretary to Chief Minister accompanied by Traffic Police and PWD officials visited both sides of Agacaim and Cortalim junctions regarding the traffic bottlenecks.

PWD has been directed to make a slipway from Cortalim junction for traffic moving towards Margao to ease flow of traffic. Work is being taken up immediately. Pot hole filling that’s being hampered by incessant rains is being taken up on continuous basis with deployment of additional manpower.

Traffic police have been directed to deploy additional manpower to ensure lane driving and regulate smooth movement of traffic. 2 platoons of IRBn have been deployed. Police have issued detailed instructions to field formations for continuous monitoring of traffic situation.

Traffic has since been moving smoothly along the highway.

ECO TOURISM UNIT INAUGURATED IN OLD GOA

Panaji: August 16, 2018  …  The ICAR-Indian Council of Agricultural Research- Central Coastal Agricultural Research Institute at Old Goa threw open its doors of its Agro-eco tourism unit to the public, today.  This unit was inaugurated by the Director General, ICAR, New Delhi earlier in July.

The Chief Guest for the function was Shri. Deepak Narvekar, Senior Manager (Public Relations and Marketing), Goa Tourism Development Corporation Ltd. (GTDC).

The Director ICAR-CCARI, Old Goa, Dr. E.B. Chakurkar while welcoming the gathering expressed how the Mission and mandate of ICAR also included Agro-eco tourism, “Farmers form the backbone of India and if we want to ensure that the income of farmers doubles, we can’t only rely on increasing production and prices. The farmers should look at the potential in value addition and presentation of products. We must co-relate and link agriculture and tourism. “We will help disseminate knowledge in Agro-eco tourism to farmers, academician and the youth of Goa,” he added.

Dr. G. R. Mahajan, Scientist compered the program while Dr. V. Arunachalam, Principal Scientist proposed vote of thanks.
