Goan Reporter: Peidadegal Storm Into Semifinals with 4-1 Victory Over Batora United

Peidadegal secured a commanding 4-1 win over Batora United to book their place in the semifinals of the 2nd Caniza Peixoto Memorial Football Tournament, organized by Black Arrow Boys Agxem Sports Club, and played at St. Alex Church Ground, Curtorim, on Friday.

Batora United drew first blood in the 6th minute when Granville Barretto slotted home a well-placed shot. Peidadegal responded strongly, with James Fernandes narrowly missing the target in the 10th minute. However, he made no mistake in the 18th minute, scoring a fine glancing header to level the score at 1-1.

James continued his dazzling form, putting Peidadegal ahead 2-1 with a clinical finish in the 35th minute. He completed his hat-trick with a curling shot in the 46th minute, making it 3-1. The scoreline was sealed in the 51st minute when Anthony Fernandes netted Peidadegal’s fourth goal.

James Fernandes of Peidadegal was deservedly awarded the Man of the Match, presented by Micheal Pars.

Arlem Youth Association defeated Goa Velha SC 2–1, thanks to goals from Archellis Fernandes and Joyson Gauncar. Goa Velha pulled one back through Sainath Kanconkar but couldn’t find the equaliser. Sao Jose de Areal delivered a clinical and composed performance to defeat Sai Avatar SC Anjuna 2-0 in the first semifinal of the 46th Cana Benaulim Soccer Championship at the vibrant Benaulim Panchayat Ground. Anjuna started with high intensity, but Areal keeper Aggie Antao sent an early message with a flying save in the very first minute. Just two minutes later, it was Anjuna who were stunned, Alvito Moura capitalized on a crowded goalmouth scramble to fire Areal ahead. The contest remained fiercely balanced, with both sides matching each other in midfield and duels. Ashley Gomes was unstoppable on the left flank, and Areal preserved their 1-0 cushion till the break. After halftime, Anjuna surged forward with Pavan and Rohan supporting the frontmen Mohammed and Marvoti. But in their aggressive push, they left gaps at the back and Areal punished them. In the 33rd minute, Ashley Gomes whipped in a perfect cross that Stallone converted brilliantly. Agxem Sports Club defeated Pidadigal Sports Club 2-0 in the finals to lift the 7-a-side Interward Cup organised by St. Alex Parish Youth Curtorim, held at the St. Alex Church Ground, Curtorim on Sunday. Both teams displayed attacking football, but it was Agxem who capitalised, with Alroy Gomes scoring in the first half and Jovial Martins netting in the second. Chief Guest Fr. Victor Viegas presented the prizes in the presence of Fr. Manuel Dias, Fr. Michael, Fr. Santario, Rui Menezes and other dignitaries. St Anthony SC Assolda booked their place in the semifinals of the 52nd Custodio Memorial Football Tournament with a dramatic 7–6 win over Navelim Sporting Club via a penalty shootout at the Raia Panchayat Ground on Friday.

The match kicked off with Navelim’s Jayson Coutinho getting an early chance in the 6th minute, but his shot went off target. Just minutes later, Cajetan Fernandes of St Anthony SC Assolda launched a quick counterattack but narrowly missed scoring in the 10th minute.

Navelim Sporting broke the deadlock in the 35th minute through Roland Pereira, who found the net with a fine glancing header.

St Anthony SC Assolda regrouped after the break and equalised in the 46th minute through a well-placed shot by Moises D’Sa, making it 1–1.

With no further goals in regulation time, the match went into a penalty shootout. St Anthony SC Assolda held their composure to win 7–6 in the tense tiebreaker.

Fr. Agnelo YSC Paroda registered a dominant 6–1 victory over Ugem Rising Club to secure a spot in the quarterfinals of the 17th St. Anthony Festival Cup, organised by St. Anthony SC Assolda and played at Moll Ground, Assolda, on Thursday.

Joy Fernandes was the star of the match, netting four goals in the 22nd, 29th, 35th, and 43rd minutes, while Nelson Fernandes added a brace in the 16th and 56th minutes. Pratamesh Gaonkar scored the lone goal for Ugem Rising Club in the 29th minute.

St John the Baptist Panchayat Ground, Benaulim – Parish Youth Nuvem stormed into the quarterfinals of the Benaulim Villagers Cup with a hard-fought 1–0 win over Sporting Club Davorlim in a thrilling encounter. Nuvem asserted dominance early on, controlling possession through midfield duo Jonas Colaco and Alvito Dias. Their pressure paid off in the 22nd minute when Albino smashed a thunderous strike into the top-left corner, leaving the Davorlim goalkeeper rooted. The second half saw Nuvem push for a second goal to seal the game, but Davorlim responded with intensity. Ajay Raj came closest to equalising in the 42nd minute, only to be denied by a brilliant save from Nuvem custodian Selfon Dias. The 11th edition of the Rotary Rain Run, Goa’s most anticipated monsoon running event, is set to take place on Sunday, July 27, with over 2,500 runners expected to participate in a vibrant show of endurance and purpose through the rain-washed streets of Panaji. Organised by the Rotary Charitable Trust of Porvorim in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Porvorim and the Rotary Parivar, the event aims to raise awareness about women’s cancer, supporting the Prakash Cancer Aid Project. Prominent dignitaries including Mr Subramanian, Tamil Nadu’s Minister for Health and Family Welfare, and Goa DGP Alok Kumar are among the participants, adding visibility and significance to the cause. The race will flag off at the SAG Athletics Stadium, Bambolim, featuring categories like the 2 km Fun Walk, 5 km Dream Run, 10 km, and 21 km timed races. The event also includes a Seniority Walk for senior citizens and a Fun Zone for children. “This run is more than a fitness event—it’s a growing movement for health, purpose, and community,” said Avinash Singh Parmar, chairman of the Rotary Rain Run. The 21 km runners will enjoy a scenic route turning at Miramar Circle, with sweeping views of Goa’s coast and heritage landmarks. With a certified course approved by World Athletics in partnership with AIMS, the Rotary Rain Run has built a strong reputation among both amateur and international runners. Guardian Angel Sports Club, Curchorem, secured a convincing 4-1 victory over Carmel Sports Club, Navelim, to book a spot in the quarterfinals of the 17th St. Anthony Festival Cup 2025, organized by St. Anthony Sports Club Assolda and played at the Moll Ground, Assolda, on Tuesday. The opener came in the 34th minute from Fedrich Fernandes with a well-measured volley. Just before halftime, Velington Almeida’s powerful 30-yard strike for Carmel SC rattled the crossbar. At the break, Guardian Angel SC led 1-0. In the second half, Guardian Angel took full control. Raston Costa netted a brace in the 40th and 59th minutes, while Cyril Dias added another in the 48th. Carmel managed a consolation goal through Velington Almeida. Raston Costa was named Man of the Match and received the award from Guardian Angel Club President Jhoncy Fernandes.
