Goa Revolution Day was observed with patriotic fervour to commemorate the historic uprising of June 18, 1946 that marked the beginning of Goa’s freedom movement against Portuguese colonial rule, at a programme held at Lohia Maidan, Margao today.

Minister for PWD, Shri. Digambar Kamat paid rich tributes to the freedom fighters and martyrs who fought courageously for the cause of Goa’s freedom.  Highlighting the significance of Goa Revolution Day, he said Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia played an instrumental role in igniting the mind of people to fight for freedom against the colonial rule. Younger generation need to get inspired by the sacrifices made by these great freedom fighters and uphold the values of patriotism, unity and dedication towards the nation. He made a special mention of the social service which many freedom fighters continued even after the Goa liberation – NGO MARG dedicated for Road safety, founded by freedom fighter Gurunath Kelekar is one among them he pointed.

‘The country is marching towards better future and achieving growth in every sector under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri. Narendra Modi. Following the footsteps of Prime Minister, our Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant too works tirelessly for the betterment of Goa with an aim to transform the State into Viksit Goa by 2037′, Shri Kamat said.

Shri. Kamat further stated, Growing popularity of various welfare schemes such as Mhaje Ghar Yojana reiterates government’s commitment towards for the welfare of people and reflects the trust and confidence of people on the Government.

President of Freedom fighters’ Children Association Shri. Avinash Shirodkar appreciated the efforts made by the Government towards betterment of children of freedom fighters. He urged students to reduce screen time and focus more on studies and physical activities.

MLA’s, Shri. Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco and Shri. Ulhas Tuenkar; South Goa Collector, Smt. Egna Cleetus, IAS; Superintendent of Police, Shri. Tikam Singh Verma; Former Union Minister Shri .Eduardo Faleiro, freedom fighter Shri. Vasant Naik and others were present on the occasion.

The programme was followed by patriotic songs presented by students of various schools in the vicinity.
