RPF unites boy with parents

0

11/07/2014 … The humane side of the men in uniform once again drew applause from public when the RPF of Konkan Railway recently re-united a young boy with his parents.

The boy, Akash, 14 year old, who is studying in IXth class at Kundapura, was found travelling alone in school uniform in the general coach of train no. 11098 Poorna Express by the RPF when the latter were conducting a drive to prevent eunuch menace in trains.

Upon enquiring, the boy gave some vague replies. Suspecting that he is lying, the RPF personnel de-boarded him and brought him to the RPF outpost.

The boy finally spilled the beans and informed that he had run away from his home to escape daily torture by his father. He said that he left his school bicycle at Kundapura Railway station and had boarded the train so that he could go to Mumbai and then from there travel towards West Bengal where his relatives stay.

The RPF informed the boy’s parents and asked them to come to the RPF outpost. When the parents reached there, the visibly shocked father, who is working as a car driver in the Gulf and was visiting them on a holiday, said that he had scolded his son for not performing well in the exams and had restricted his wandering in the evenings so that he should devote time to his studies. However, the boy was angry over this and left the house without informing anyone.

The parents of the boy requested the RPF to release their son. The son was counseled by RPF personnel but he was not willing to go with his parents. So the RPF called the President of the Parents Association of schools of Bhatkal area, Shri Radhakrishan Bhat, to the station. After being counseled by Shri Bhat, the boy agreed to go back home and promised that he would not repeat this.

This act of the RPF was lauded by Shri Bhat and the parents of the boy who were profusely thankful to the RPF Sub-Inspector – Shri Santosh Gaonkar and the Constable – Shri Praveen K, for reuniting their son with them.

SMT. ALVA TO BE SWORN-IN AS GOVERNOR OF GOA ON JULY 12

0

July 11, 2014 …. The swearing-in-ceremony of gvernor raj bhavanHon’ble Governor of Rajasthan and Gujarat, Smt. Margaret Alva as Governor of Goa, will be held at 6.00 pm on Saturday, July 12, 2014. Chief Justice of Bombay High Court Mr. Justice Mohit Shantilal Shah will administer the oath of office to the Governor at Durbar hall of the Raj Bhavan.

Smt. Alva – a lawyer, parliamentarian and former Union Minister — is credited with steering several landmark legislations through the Indian parliament to improve the position of women in society and polity. While unflinchingly advocating an ‘inclusive India’ guided by Constitutional values, Smt. Alva — in her gubernatorial role — sees herself as a ‘Friend, Philosopher and Guide’ to the State Government.

Beginning her political career as the only woman Block President in Karnataka after the split of 1969, she went on to head the Congress Party’s women’s wing in Karnataka in 1972. She soon moved on to become the General Secretary of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee. Two years later, Smt. Alva, 32, was elected to the Rajya Sabha. Thereafter, there was no turning back.

As a Member of Parliament – Rajya Sabha (1974 – 98) and Lok Sabha (1999 -2004) – Smt. Alva served on several parliamentary committees. She was appointed Union Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs in the Rajiv Gandhi Government in 1984, later moving to the Ministry of Human Resource Development in charge of Youth Affairs and Sports, Women and Child Development.

In 1991 she was appointed Union Minister of State for Personnel, Pensions, Public Grievances and Administrative Reforms (attached to the Prime Minister). She also served as Minister for Science & Technology for a brief period.

Smt. Alva spearheaded some major legislative amendments passed by the Indian Parliament involving women’s rights, the most important being reservation of quotas for women in local bodies.

She steered legislation on Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) and amendments to the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961, and the Suppression of Immoral Traffic Act, 1956. She also helped draft the National Perspective Plan for Women – a blueprint for policies for empowerment of women, which has been adopted as a guide by Union and state governments.

Several far reaching reforms in the sports management and infrastructure fields took shape with her efforts. As Minister of State for Personnel, Smt. Alva initiated the process of administrative decentralization, taking governance to the grass roots.

In 2004, Smt. Alva’s parliamentary experience was tapped by the Indian Parliament with her appointment as Advisor to the Bureau of Parliamentary Studies and Training, a body set up to help improve standards of legislative functioning in Parliament and State Assemblies by training newly elected MPs and MLAs in their work.

She simultaneously served as General Secretary of the AICC for five years. On completion of this assignment (2004-09), Smt. Alva was appointed the Governor of Uttarakhand in 2009. She moved to Rajasthan, as Governor, in 2012.

With the Constitution of India enjoining upon Governors of States with sizeable tribal population to monitor progress in Tribal Sub Plan (TSP) areas, Smt. Alva – carrying forward a proposal mooted by her predecessor Shri Shivraj Patil –set up a Tribal Cell in Raj Bhawan, Jaipur. Having visited most of the tribal districts of Rajasthan, Smt. Alva has been communicating her suggestions on tribal development issues to the State Government for follow-up action.

Smt. Alva, Member of Parliament for 30 years, confesses to being a “reluctant politician”. “My husband, Niranjan Alva, whose parents Joachim and Violet Alva, freedom fighters, were the first couple in the Indian Parliament, persuaded me to accept Karnataka Congress’ appointment to lead its women’s wing in 1972”.

Smt. Alva and her husband – both lawyers — practiced in the Supreme Court. She has represented India at several international conferences. Recipient of several Awards for contribution to public life, Smt. Alva has lectured at, among others, Harvard and Columbia Universities.

A painter, interior decorator and social worker by temperament, Smt. Alva enjoys being among people. She lives with her husband and values time spent with her three sons a daughter and their nine children.

GFDC appoints Technical Director Karnagaran (Katz) Naidoo

0

10/07/IMG_4278 (Copy)2014 … GFDC Chairman Dr. Rufino Monteiro and Member Secretary Mr. Elvis Gomes unveiled the Councils Technical Director Karnagaran (Katz) Naidoo to the press this evening in the presence of Vice Chairman Mr. Anthony Bothelo.

Outlining GFDC’s aims of taking football forward, Dr Monteiro stressed that Katz’s programme would be to give practical shape to GFDC’s master plan for football which has been designed with inputs from the Council members and eminent sports personalities that had participated in GIFT – a seminar organised by GFDC a year ago.

With Katz taking over the technical work of GFDC , football training at all the centres will be taken to the next level and our trainees would receive scientific training in keeping with the needs of modern times . With this the aim and dreams of our Chief Minister who declared football as an official state sport and formed GFDC would materialise,” stated Dr Monteiro.

“ Katz is here to implement GFDC’s vision for football. Being a technical man with huge experience and highly recommended by people associated with African football , we had not much hesitations after analysing his vision for football.” Stated member secretary Mr. Gomes.

“Football needs to supplement its own eco- system. Community development forms a part of taking football development to every nook and corner available. Katz was recommended by Dr Robinson Peterson. Not just recommendations. Katz during his visit to see and understand our aims impressed us with his footprints to take the game forward. He is in-charge. Off- course we are here to help him in any way that will take the game forward,” stated Mr. Gomes.

Katz – as he is fondly called- in his address to the press demonstrated how football when looked scientifically can be enjoyed . It is a game that holds no barriers. It is the sport that fascinates all. I am here to learn from everyone. I have come here to leave behind a legacy. Football knows no barriers, says the coach from south Africa but with Indian origins.

“ There is no question of putting regimes. Training should be fun. When you enjoy , you learn best. There is no question of putting fear or running down any one. The idea is to get the best out of everyone. God is bestowed talent on everyone. We are instruments to tap those talents, “ stated Katz.

Having played and having been brought up in apartheid plagued South Africa, life was a steep climb. I survived because football is my love and football is all I know. I took this opportunity to come to Goa as a signal from above,” said the ebullient Technical Director.

Katz has a CV that will make most eyes twinkle with envy. Right from teaching football in South Africa , he has had stints in other countries in Asia and Europe. But it is not qualifications that matter much to him. It is how you learn to play. Katz in his simple words , let it be known that his decision to come here will be supplemented by the legacy he leaves behind.
