Salgaocar hold Sporting Clube de Goa

27/08/2014 … Super Sub Victorino Fernandes came off the bench to equalize as Sporting Clube de Goa drew 1-1 with Salgaocar Football Club in Gfa’s Goa Pro League, at Duler stadium, Mapusa, on Tuesday. Salgaocar were leading 1-0 at the interval.

Reigning Goa Pro League champions, Sporting Goa took time to find their groove, but when they finally did there was no looking back as Victorino caused all kinds of havoc with his pace.

Salgaocar moved the ball well in the first session and were rewarded when Pierre Douhou beautifully netted into the top corner with a strike from outside the box, just two minutes before the breather.

Changing over Sporting Goa was resilient as they sprayed the ball around positively and patiently. The introduction of Victorino of the bench for the Flaming Oranje increased the tempo.

Within ten minutes of coming on, Victorino did well to intercept a short back pass to the goalkeeper and stole in to bury the ball low for the Sporting Goa equalizer.

Sporting Goa continued to grow in confidence, but could not add to the score line. In the end both teams had to settle for a point each.

Salgaocar FC sign African Cup of Nations winner as Marquee player!

19/08/2014  …. Salgaocar FC have landed their Marquee player in the form of 27 year old Zambian International, Francis Kasonde. The 6 foot tall versatile defender was instrumental in guiding Zambia to the African Cup of Nations in 2012. He currently has 36 International Caps to his credit, having made his debut in 2005. Kasonde netted his first International goal in a 1-1 draw against Egypt and donned the colours of Hapoel Ra’anana A.F.C in the Israeli Premier League during the 2013-14 season.

Kasonde, Salgaocar’s third foreign signing, comes a couple of days after the Greens renewed the contract of last season’s top scorer, Darryl Duffy. With Douhou Pierre roped in earlier in the year from Pune FC, the former I-League champions have ensured that all key positions across the spine have been entrusted to their experienced foreign signings.

Kasonde has in the past played in several defensive positions, before being deployed as a defensive midfielder ahead of the African Cup of nations. He brings with him rich experience having previously played in Saudi Arabia and Egypt with the highlight of his club career being, finishing Runners Up to Inter Milan for Congolese Club, TP Mazembe at the 2012 FIFA Club World Cup.

“I am delighted to move to India and join a club with such rich history”, remarked the player after undergoing his medicals. “Winning trophies are extremely important in the career of every footballer and I hope to make a significant contribution to Salgaocar FC in their quest for silverware this season”, the player added.

A visibly pleased coach Derrick Pereira had the following to say after a training session at the Duler Stadium. “Francis is a welcome addition to our squad and his experience of playing at the highest level should benefit us greatly at the heart of defence. I now have at my disposal almost an entire squad, which allows me to focus purely on the job at hand.”

Coincidentally, Kasonde’s position is one that the gaffer made his very own during his playing days at the club.

Amiri penalty earns solitary goal win in Charity game

18/08/2014 … A second half penalty from Haroon Amiri earned Dempo Sports Club a 1-0 win over 10-men Sporting Clube de Goa in Gfa’s Charity Cup match, at Duler Stadium, Mapusa on Sunday. The match was goalless at the interval.

Sporting Goa had to play the last thirty five minutes with only ten men after Chandrasheker Chinta was sent off after he was adjudged to have pushed Clifford Miranda in the box, although the contact did not look intentional. It was this incident which led to Dempo being awarded a penalty that Haroon calmly slotted home.

Sporting Goa sent out an early warning in the fifteenth minute after Sumit Ghosh rattled the cross bar with a powerful free kick.

At the other end Clifford came close for Dempo, but the Sporting Goa custodian Melroy Fernandes who was in impressive form palmed the ball away. Just before the breather, Melroy pulled off a marvelous double save from Holicharan Nazary.

Changing over Melroy had to be replaced early on through injury, which was a big loss for Sporting Goa.

The game dropped in tempo after Sporting Goa was reduced to ten men. The only clear cut chance was when Dempo’s Holciharan hit the post.

Late on the Flaming Oranje tried to find the equalizer as they used up all of their allotted seven substitutions, but it was not to be as Dempo capitalized on their numerical advantage and held on.

The only consolation for Sporting Goa was when new signing Pablo Gallardo came on to taste the action and looked composed.

Sporting Clube de Goa Coach Oscar Bruzon happy with pre-season preparation

01/08/2014 …. “The 5 players currently in the Czech Republic is proof that we are moving in the right direction and we must continue to work hard as a group to achieve more goals,” remarked Sporting Clube de Goa Head Coach Oscar Bruzon addressing his players at  the end of the second week of pre-season, at Duler Stadium, Mapusa on Saturday.

Oscar was referring to the 5 SCG players, namely Keenan Almeida, Joyner Lourenco, Rowlin Borges, Ravi Kumar and Kamaljeet Singh, who are currently doing duty for the India U-23 national team on an exposure trip in the Czech Republic, which is the largest representation selected from any of the I-League clubs.

With a clenched fist, Coach Oscar has plenty to smile about as he repeats the word “Power”, after witnessing a high intensity circuit training workout which focused on plyometric power and resistance.

Although this was the second week back, Oscar believes it to be the first week of pre-season training as the initial days is about team building and assessing his player’s level of fitness after the break.

“The first few days are all about affinity, making sure the new signings and young players are welcomed by the established players in the group,” stated Oscar.

“After carrying out the aerobic and anaerobic tests I was pleased that all the players were around the same level,” added Oscar.

As Oscar starts his second full season in the hot seat, he is content that his philosophy is starting to rub off on the players. For example the after practice habit of aerated drinks by some, has been replaced by protein shakes, as the players become more and more professional in their thinking.

In the last year, the club has lifted the Goa Super Cup and are the current Goa Pro league champs and Gfa knock out winners. Oscar now feels the club can slowly scale bigger heights.

“We are always looking to improve season upon season, making sure that the curve on the graph is pointing in the right direction. We have made some great signings in the summer and I can assure the fans that we will be very competitive,” signed off Oscar.
