Minister for Social Welfare, Shri. Subhash Phal Dessai today expressed that Goa Revolution Day also referred as Kranti Din symbolises great courage and determination of freedom fighters towards freedom struggle against Portuguese rule and announced that Government has plans to conserve Memorials at Lohia Maidan, Margao, Azad Maidan, Panaji and other historic sites under the Heritage Policy conceived by the Department of Archives.
He was addressing the gathering at a function organised to celebrate Goa Revolution Day at Lohia Maidan, Margao today.
Shri. Phal Dessai paying the richest tributes to Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia who ignited the urge for freedom among the goans against colonial rule said that young generation has to cherish freedom movement and martyrdom that Goa has witnessed and pave strong path of development by performing our fundamental duties towards the society rather than enjoying mere rights.
18 th June marks the beginning of Goa’s liberation movement led by Dr.Ram Manohar Lohia and Juliao Menezes against Portuguese rule in 1946, he said. Shri. Phal Dessai also informed that the Government intends to produce an animation web series based on the freedom struggle of Goa comprising 22 episodes which will showcase the great sacrifice and determination of freedom fighters to the young generation.
He lauded the Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant for his relentless efforts towards development of the State.
President, 18th June Kranti Samiti Shri. Avinash Shirodkar recalling the sacrifice and courage demonstrated by the freedom fighters during the freedom struggle expressed the need for conservation of all the historic sites wherein freedom fighters laid the marks of their struggle.
Shri. Shirodkar, thanking the present Government for employing few children of freedom fighters in Government Services, recently urged the Government to recruit the remaining 35 individuals as soon as possible.
Earlier the dignitaries paid tributes to the memorial of Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia followed by guard of honour by the Police Troupe. MLA, Margao Shri. Digamber Kamat, MLA Navelim Shri. Ulhas Tuenkar, Chairman, Margao Municipal Council Shri. Damodar Shirodkar, South Goa Collector Smt. Egna Cleetus IAS, SP South Goa Shri. Tikam Singh Verma IPS, Researcher Shri. Abhishek Ranjan Singh and freedom fighter Shri. Vasant Naik were present on the occasion.
